Rabbi Yehuda Loewe, best known as the Maharal of Prague, was one of the greatest Torah giants in the last 500 years. He lived in the 16th century, during a time of great tension for European Jews, when every Pesach season was colored by fears of persecution, beatings, arrests, and worse. There is a tradition which has not been established, that in the face of these threats, Maharal created a Golem, a humanoid figure formed from mud and brought to life by secret prayers and Kabbalistic sayings.
