Description
The United States took possession of the Mississippi Territory from Spain in 1798. Mississippi became a state in 1817. "The primary settlements in Mississippi during the 1800's were along the Mississippi River and the Natchez Trace, a route over land from Natchez to Nashville Tennessee. Therefore, most newspapers available at the State Archives for the period 1801 to 1850 were in these areas."
