Merton was a teacher for most of his adult life, starting when he was a masters student at Columbia University in the fall of 1938 and including all but his first formative years as a monk of Gethsemani. At Columbia he taught composition in the extension division, and continued as an assistant professor of English literature at what was then St. Bonaventure College up until his admission into Gethsemani Abbey on December 10th in 1941.
